We at Affirm seek a thoughtful, proficient Senior Paralegal for the Intellectual Property ("IP") section of our Corporate Legal team. This paralegal is an integral part of Corporate Legal but also partners closely with Litigation, Employment, and other teams.
Affirm is on a mission to improve consumer finance through better technology, lower costs, and increased transparency. We seek teammates who are flexible, enjoy diversity, and are able to manage various projects and matters at a time, including the maintenance and growth of Affirm’s worldwide IP portfolio, providing litigation assistance, and improving legal operations.
What you'll do
- Manage and develop Affirm's IP portfolio
- Assist in the preparation, filing, prosecution, and maintenance of U.S. and foreign trademark and patent applications; manage docketing to track these efforts; and collaborate closely with the broader legal department, in-house clients (including marketing, engineering, and product teams), and outside counsel
- Conduct patent and trademark searches, review watch notices, and manage domain name registrations, as needed
- Manage patent reward program for Affirm inventors
- Conduct preliminary investigations into potential IP infringements
- Draft "cease and desist" letters and various other legal documents, plus respond to subpoenas
- Work across a spectrum of sophisticated legal, business, and strategic issues
What we look for
- 5+ years of IP paralegal experience from in-house or law-firm environments
- Outstanding attention to detail and skills with organizing and time management
- Background as a key member of a successful team
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including tact, sensitivity, and interacting well with team members at all levels
- Flexible and autonomous: able to decide independently, work with limited supervision, and enjoy a fast-paced environment of innovation
- Inquisitive nature: loves to pose questions, challenge processes, etc.
- Strong project management, critical thinking, and analytical skills
- Low ego, honest, and wants to be included in a strong, encouraging team

The majority of our roles are remote and can be located anywhere in the U.S. and Canada (with the exception of the U.S. Territories, Quebec, Yukon, Nunavut, and the Northwest Territories) unless the job indicates a different global location. We are currently building operations in Spain, Poland, and Australia. Employees in remote roles have the option of working remotely or from an Affirm office in their country of hire, and may occasionally travel to an Affirm office or elsewhere for required meetings or team-building events. Our offices in Chicago, New York, Pittsburgh, Salt Lake City, San Francisco and Toronto will remain operational and accessible for anyone to use on a voluntary basis, subject to local COVID-19 guidelines.
